Matariki Celebration
Matariki is so intriguing.
At Glen Innes School it was the first Friday of the term three and we were going to have a celebration. The celebration was about Matariki and stars. The Matariki is a cluster not a constellation. The Matariki is a group of 7 stars and in the past people used them to guide them. Room 8 had a song about the Matariki stars and we also had some moves. Do you know the dance moves to the song macarena? Because those were the moves!
The song went like Witi, Wita, Waipuna Rangi, Tupu-ā-nuku, Tupu-ā-rangi, Ururangi, Matariki. After the third break we were going to go around the classes and look at their art. The art Room 8 had made were some wishing stars and a map of the stars. When we went to Room 11 I was breath taken, the art was beautiful. I love Room 2 and 3’s art. It was so neat for 5 and 6 year olds.
After we had been to all the classes we went to the hall to have the hangi. All the classes were in their own circles. One by one the classes went up the kitchen to get their hangi, when it was Room 8’s turn we went up to get our meal. The hangi was in a small square box. When we sat down again I opened the box and inside was some chicken, caret, komera, pumpkin, peas, a pea pod and some potato. I ate the chicken, the chicken was sooo good (yum).
After that we all went out to play. I was nervous because I had to perform in front of the whole school. When I was playing I was called to get ready for the performance. I had to get my poi and rako, when the kapa haka group were all set we warmed up our voices and went over all the things we were going to sing while everyone came in. When everyone was settled Mr Hendriks announced that ‘’the Kapa Haka group is going to perform’’, so we started. We did five songs in all and I had messed up in one of the songs.
When we went backstage we put our shoes and socks on and went out the back door so we went in the main entrance, one of the kids in my class wondered how we got back in line so fast. I felt so proud of myself!
